Air can sometimes be both below freezing but still saturated with ‘super-cooled’ water droplets. In these conditions of freezing fog or cloud, the droplets freeze when they make contact with hard surfaces (such as roads, grass, trees or cable). The resultant ‘rime’ can sometimes build up on the exposed (windward) side of the surfaces to a thickness of several centimetres.
