Polar Vortex

Centred over polar regions, this is a circulation of strong winds high up in the stratosphere, up to 30 miles (50 km) above the earth. It is present in winter, and can exert an influence lower down the atmosphere on the jet stream. A strong Polar Vortex can often be linked to a strong jet stream, and vice versa.
